I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own - Audre Lorde
We believe that business can be a force for good in the world. At Merchant Road, we are committed to working towards creating a fairer, more equal society. It is estimated that 80 percent of the world's refugees are women and children. With more people being forced to flee from their homes now than at any other point in history, the refugee crisis is not something we can choose to ignore.
Securing employment is vital for people from refugee backgrounds to become self-sufficient and to feel a sense of belonging and connection to their new home. Barriers to employment include low-level English-language skills, a lack of established networks, limited knowledge of the Australian workplace, and discrimination. It is four times harder for women from refugee backgrounds to find work in Australia than what it is for their male counterparts.
The traineeships are a life-changing opportunity for the women we work with at Merchant Road, enabling them to gain vital skills, familiarize themselves with Australian workplace culture, improve their self-confidence and secure ongoing employment.
